The first two days at Oopsla
First Worksop
On the first day Emanuel and I (further referred to as we) went to the Eclipse Technology Exchange. This consisted of 15 small lectures with a short discussion session afterwards. Although the topics of the lectures were differing from each other It was not interesting especially because interaction was nearly not existent.
Chinese Restaurant
In the evening we went to a Chinese restaurant together with Peter Sommerlad. In spite of the fact that all three of us did not order much. We received a huge amount of food which we were not able to eat although it tasted really good. Afterwards we directly went to bed because we were tired from the long and exhausting day.
Morning Run
The second day I went for a morning run through the city and the “Mont-Royal” park. I started at six o’clock when it was still dark and therfore it was quite hard to find the way through the park up to the view point. Finally I arrived and I had a great view over the whole city by an absolutely nice morning mood.
During my run I noticed an interesting thing, namlely that at this time in the morning only sportive people (runner, biker) are in this park. Back in the hotel I went to the fitness room for stretching. There I met Erich Gamma so I took the opportunity I took to talk a little to him in Swiss German.
Second Workshop
Through the second day we attended the workshop No Silver Bullet which was way better than the first! Many well known people where in this little room. Martin Fowler, Bill Obdyke, Steven Fraser, Dennis Mancel, Brian Foote, Robert Biddle, Ricardo Lopez to name a few. In totally we were about 15 people and a lot of interaction was going on. To quote Martin Fowler: “This workshop is like a day of corridor conversation”. To explain this to Oopsla unfamiliar people this is what it is all about ![]()
Nearly the whole workshop went together to lunch, once again it was Chinese food
But this time we had the real experts with us (Steven Fraser).
The second workshop was an absolute success for me. It was an amazing experience to hear all the opinions of all these “important” people!
Pictures will follow soon ![]()
